39 West Special Needs Housing

Los Angeles, CA- With Marmol Radziner & Assoc.

Sliding behind a facade of a former bank, a new building was designed housing 33 studio units for mentally disabled residents. Keeping the masonry walls allowed a zero lot line setback to be grandfathered in. Stucco material acts as a second “skin” distinguishing itself from the brick façade highlighting the layered history of the site. The original arched entry opens to an exterior hall leading to a light filled 3 story courtyard complete with varying circulation paths and unique landings to accommodate chance encounters. A small job skills classroom residing in the courtyard is intended to help the residents gain independence while reinforcing the courtyard’s role in fostering a sense of community.
