Doylestown PA has reinvented itself in the face of changing economic forces affecting numerous American downtowns. Our addition to an existing movie theater adds one new movie space and offices above while also proving to be an opportunity to create a community welcome mat. Utilizing familiar forms including, inverted bays, front porches, and side entrances and reinterpreting them at a larger scale, a community scaled front porch and court was established at the facade. From a wayfinding standpoint the court’s depth introduces a visual respite, offering the passer by a moment of pause. A variety of community events, and movie premieres can utilize the space along with seasonal use by the café/ bar patrons residing on tables and chairs in the outdoor space. Insulated garage doors offer a cost effective way of opening up the indoors, effectively increasing the size of the court while adding value to an already vibrant example of a thriving downtown.
