Goldberg Commons - Chicago Prize 2012

Chicago, IL

This project studied how to best preserve Goldberg’s iconic clover leaf structure once home to Prentice Women’s Hospital. Northwestern University who owned it needed more research and lab space than would fit in the existing space. In lieu of tearing down the iconic structure, we proposed they  repurpose it as an University owned boutique hotel, while utilizing a large empty lot they owned across the street to locate the labs in a mixed used university commons. The proposed research labs, mixed in with commercial & office spaces would define Goldberg Commons. Hybrid zoning would achieve their practical goals while providing a vital place in the heart for their Campus and the immediate neighborhood.
