This second-floor addition project’s massing took cues from the existing structure below and aligned structural elements accordingly. This kept costs down while creating a structure that avoided the typical layer cake solution of stacking the second floor directly and completely over the first. The resulting transformation of the existing 1940’s ranch is one where the line between existing and new is erased and a new 2 story house emerged.
