LAX Childcare Center

Los Angeles, CA - With Marmol Radziner & Assoc.

This winning competition scheme attempted to embody a building’s responsibility to the community, and its sense of providing a home away from home. The design accomplishes this with an underlying theme of relating to the scale of a child. As a budgetary limit modular, prefabricated classrooms were introduced to form a courtyard around a central play area. Wing shaped canopies, each with a unique shape and shifted angle, gives shelter and a sense of identity to each of the age group areas and contrast the uniformity of the classrooms by introducing an element of scale and specificity.
